Welcome to my website
As the re-elected Member for Leichhardt, I’m very happy to represent this region in a Coalition Government. Thank you for putting your faith in me for another three years! I have been overwhelmed by the number of people who supported my campaign in so many ways. I’m looking forward to being able to deliver more for the Far North and restore hope, reward and opportunity for all Australians.
We’re sending out a very strong message to the community that we are open for business, and the first priority nationally is to start work on getting rid of the carbon tax. I was also very pleased to be asked to Chair the committee that will formulate the White Paper that will drive the Coalition’s Policy for Northern Australia. We’ll look at all aspects in relation to water security, land tenure, the insurance issues, diversity for economic security, tropical education, health and sports, defence, fishing…. a whole raft of things.
Locally, it’s vital that we start looking at opportunities that have already materialised and judge them on their merits, rather than on philosophical opposition or by acquiescing to a minority group. Considering what is proposed to happen in this region, I think we’re in for some very prosperous times. Some of the key local issues/policies I will be focusing on include:
Ø promoting opportunities with China, in particular new streamlined visa processing;
Ø monitoring the Aquis Resort proposal at Yorkeys Knob, and if the EIS stacks up, ensure that within three years the development has started;
Ø fulfilling our commitment to get out of the way of small business, enabling them to prosper and become profitable;
Ø organising the round table with the State Government and insurers, as part of the Northern Australia White Paper to reduce insurance pressure on property owners;
Ø keeping the Northern Australia policy front and centre, ensuring the expansion of HMAS Cairns, the National Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine and the Tropical Campus for the Australian Institute of Sport are centrepieces for our region;
Ø working with the Mossman Botanic Garden project, and putting the focus back on the Port Douglas waterfront, once the new council is formed in 2014;
Ø continue advocating for the Mossman District Nursing Home and Star of the Sea Nursing Home, ensuring our aged can access safe and consistent care;
Ø restoring Scherger’s integrity as an operational defence base, as was recommended in the 2013 Defence White Paper;
Ø continue supporting Daintree Coast residents and businesses in their bid for reliable and affordable electricity, while also investigating large-scale renewable energy options in the wider region;
Ø promoting a new approach to targeting detection and treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis in the Western Province of PNG, reducing the threat to Australian citizens in the Torres Strait and mainland communities; and
Ø getting people fishing again, by opening up marine parks with multiple-use zones where sustainable commercial and recreational fishing can take place.
If, by the end of this three-year team, we don’t see these projects either underway or completed, or there is a very good non-government related reason why they aren’t, then we won’t have done our job and we‘ll be judged accordingly. It’s a big task but I’m very excited, I know I’m up to it.
If there is something I can help you with, please feel free to contact me via Email, or through your Local Office.
